Company History

After 25 years of importing and distributing assistive communication aids, Ivan Pivac, one of the founding members of Awhina Technologies, decided to begin manufacturing the products that customers were asking for but did not exist. Out of a desire to fill gaps in the market with high quality products which meet the needs of the end user, he teamed up with Warren Hayman, an electronic engineer with 18 years professional design experience, as well as several external consultants and in 2003 Awhina Technologies Ltd. was born.

Ivan himself is totally blind so has a first hand understanding of the difficulties which are faced by people with a disability. He also knows that a disability does not need to be as limiting at it may at first seem. With a little assistance most disabled people can achieve their dreams and this is the attitude that is behind Awhina Technologies.

Company Philosophy

The word "Awhina" (pronounced a-fe-na) comes from the Maori language (the indigenous people of New Zealand) and is roughly translated as "assistance to independent capability". At Awhina Technologies Ltd. we are committed to using advanced technology to give independent capability to people restricted by disability.

Our designers consider it a privilege to be able-bodied and have a drive to create a level playing field where everyone can enjoy this strange and exciting world that we live in.
